The activity of Kemin (Metformin Hydrochloride) is different from that of Sulphonylurea. It reduces elevated blood glucose concentrations in patients with diabetes but it does not increase insulin secretion. This is probably the reason why it does not cause hypoglycemia. Metformin seems to potentiate insulin action by enhancing insulin binding to its receptors and/or post-receptors. Metformin improves the blood lipoprotein profile not only in diabetic but also in non-diabetic subjects with hyperlipoproteinemia.
In non-insulin dependent diabetis mellitus (NIDDM) where diet has failed to reduce the blood glucose, specially if the patient is overweight, Kemin Tablet (Metformin) can be given as initial therapy or can be administered in combination with sulphonylurea. In insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), Kemin Tablet (Metformin) may be given as an adjuvent in patients whose symptoms are not well-controlled and who are often obese.
